Gibraltar Undergraduate Studies Bursary 24-25 Cohort

This fall, the Barzilai Foundation is proud to be supporting another cohort of students for our Undergraduate Studies Bursary program, in collaboration with Bayside School, Westside School, Gibraltar College of Further Education, and the EV Foundation. Following last year’s inaugural cohort of eight students, we are extending bursaries to another eight students again for the 2024-25 school year.

2024 Cohort of Recipients with Bursary Team

The Barzilai Foundation established this bursary program to support talented students by reducing the financial burdens associated with earning a degree. Although Gibraltar residents receive educational assistance, many circumstances outside of school impose additional financial strain on candidates. Research has consistently shown that factors beyond just a student's ability and work ethic, such as financial stability, are crucial for completing a degree and achieving long-term success.

This bursary removes those financial barriers for students with financial need who have demonstrated a strong work ethic and a commitment to personal growth through higher education. Like last year, these students are determined not to let obstacles and circumstances define their futures or blunt their potential.

This year’s cohort brings a history of achieving in the face of obstacles, including:

  • An average of over 7 GCSEs passed
  • Multiple students who worked to earn money for additional courses and tutoring in order to qualify for university
  • Multiple students from single-parent households who helped financially support their families and, in some cases, younger siblings while also maintaining their studies
  • A robust set of work experience while studying that includes: first aid responder, law firm intern, swim instructor, accounting intern, food service, retail, volunteer with St. John Ambulance, and volunteer work with local Gibraltar charities

“We want to provide educational access to students who are driven to overcome obstacles and realize their potential,” said Brandon Sosa, CEO of the Barzilai Foundation. “This year’s cohort is full of individuals who fit that description perfectly. They are aspiring to achieve more in their lives, and as we enter the second year of this bursary, we continue to be inspired by the determination these students show on a daily basis.”
