Supporting Vulnerable Young Women Transition to Adulthood in Lisbon

Children who are removed from dangerous homes are spared further exposure to abuse, parental delinquency, or other damaging risks. Unfortunately, these children don’t have the family support systems that can help them as they transition into adulthood and pursue their professional goals. As they age out of support programs, they are forced to make short-term decisions to survive that limit their long-term potential.

In Portugal, the Barzilai Foundation is partnering with Fundación Maria Droste to support young women who have grown up in this situation and don’t want to sacrifice their long-term potential. Maria Droste is a Lisbon-based shelter that provides housing and care to girls who have been relocated out of dangerous situations. The organization also provides a transitional program that helps these girls build the skills they need to live independently.

In partnership with Maria Droste, the Barzilai Foundation is helping these young women take the next step toward independence. We are providing bursaries for Maria Droste residents to pursue higher education and vocational training opportunities. For these students, the costs of academic fees, supplies, or other related expenses can be a barrier to pursuing independence and financial stability. These bursaries will eliminate that barrier.

“These young women have already had to deal with so much hardship that was unfairly put upon them, and are still inspired to continue their journey from very dark places to very bright futures.” said Brandon Sosa, CEO of the Barzilai Foundation. “By investing in them at this critical juncture, we’re supporting them in changing their trajectory which will have a lifetime of impact.”
